This resulted in more and more people starting to leave WhatApp and migrate to Signal.
Signal was founded in Silicon Valley, in February 2018 with Brain Acton, who co-founded WhatsApp before it got sold to Facebook.
Especially after Elon musk tweeted about the alternative, Signal started gaining popularity.

Signal gained over 525 million monthly active users, which led to the outage of the servers running to keep Signal working.
Signal faced an outage starting on January 15, where users can open the app and send messages too, but nothing was getting delivered. Signal was expanding the capacity by adding new servers every day but millions and millions of new users were joining and sending messages which lead to the outage.
But Signal’s now back up online and working fine. Just the outage left some errors in the app as Signal shared in their recent tweet, “As the side effect of this outage, users might see errors in some of their chats.”
As an unfortunate side effect of this outage, users might see errors in some of their chats. This does *not* affect your chat’s security, but you may have missed a message from that contact. The next Signal app updates will fix this automatically. Here’s what you can do now…— Signal (@signalapp) January 17, 2021
Due to the outage, users might have missed messages from their contacts, but the next update will fix this automatically, as Signal said.
